Chateau Tongariro

Situated in New Zealand’s Tongariro National Park, the Chateau Hotel was constructed largely by labourers from Waikune Prison.

It was completed in 1928, drawing in visitors looking to ski on Mount Ruapehu or hike the volcanic peaks of Mount Tongariro and Mount Ngauruhoe.

However, in 1942 when an earthquake in Wellington caused the temporary closure of The Porirua Lunatic Asylum, the government moved many of the patients here.

During WWII the Chateau was used as a hospital and retreat for Air Force personnel returning from service.
